We went on a three-day study trip to Croatia

At the end of April we went on a 3-day study trip to Croatia, hosted by the local REYN (Roma Early Years Matters) organisation. Together with our colleagues, we were able to dive into the topic of early childhood skills education during the study trip. The programme was organised by the Czech Platform of Early Childhood NGOs, coordinated by OSF Prague since 2020. The overall aim of the project is to improve the quality of early care and education services for socially disadvantaged children and their families in the Czech Republic, so that all children can reach their full potential, regardless of their background.

On the first day, we were introduced to the BLUM programme in Budapest, at the kindergarten on Szemlőhegyi road. The experts presented the programme with the help of preschool children, through the imitation of conflicts between siblings.

The next day, we visited Oregovica, Croatia, to learn about the Roma programme of the local school. They provide a complex programme for the Roma community here, involving parents, running a pre-school and working with local institutions (police, health services, etc.). The new school building, inaugurated in 2019, provides development opportunities for more than 300 children.

The second site was in the municipality of Kursanec, where children from the local Roma camp are taught 2 x 3 hours per week in the community centre.

On the last day, we visited the kindergarten in Zagreb to learn about REYN's work, exchange views on projects and the study trip.

Thank you for organising this, it was a great opportunity!

The programme was supported by the Active Citizens Fund.
