Cross border Philanthropy in February

The February newsletter brings you the summary of our donations in 2017. More than 10.5 Million € donated through TGE! Very good news for the network and for Cross-Border Philanthropy in Europe.
We also share an interview with our Dutch partner Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and the new report by Dafne and the European Foundation Centre : Enlarging the space for European Philanthropy. 

2017 Cross-Border donations 

Thanks to the hard work of all the network, the Transnational Giving Europe Network has closed 2017 with significantly better results than the previous year 2016. We had a total of  € 10.548.981,35, which means an increase of 65% respect 2016.

The TGE network wants to thank all of our donors for their kind philanthropic gifts that help cross border giving to grow year by year enabling hundreds of beneficiaries to pursue their wonderful projects.

EVOLUTION OF TGE DONATIONS THROUGH THE YEARS

WHERE DO TGE DONATIONS COME FROM?

This map shows where the gifts come from. During 2017, 3 countries donated over 1,5MGermany comes in first place with a total of € 3,7 millions
 The following two countries are Belgium with € 2,6M and France with €1,9M. In 2017 we had 4653 donations, of which 92.7% were individuals and 7.3% corporate donations.

WHERE DO TGE DONATIONS GO TO?

This map shows the distribution of the received donations.

The country that received the biggest amount in donations is The United Kingdom, with a record figure of €4,2M. France goes second with € 3,1 millions, followed by Switzerland and Belgium, with € 1,2 and €1,1 millions received by their beneficiaries.

WHICH SECTORS ARE SUPPORTED BY TGE?

The TGE donations are adressed to hundreds of organisations in 8 sectors of action. The biggest one is education, counting with some of the most relevant universities and schools in Europe and adding up to 51% of the whole network donations, more than 5.3 Million Euros.  After that, Health and International Development are the fields our donors contributed the most to.

The operating environment for institutional philanthropy in parts of Europe is under threat. Therefore DAFNE and EFC are launched the commissioned study “Enlarging the Space for European Philanthropy”, by Oonagh Breen, Professor of Law at UCD Sutherland School of Law. This study analysis the regulatory and political challenges philanthropy is facing and elaborates ways forward that European donors and foundations can apply to work jointly with EU institutions and national governments towards a single market for philanthropy.
