Early Years Matter

In February 2018, we launched our small grants program " Building Capacities for Effective Early Childhood Development of Marginalized Roma in Hungary, which was  renamed Early Years Matter from 2021.

In the program, initially 10-12 - and later fewer - registered NGOs supporting and developing marginalized Roma communities in the Northern Hungary and Northern Great Plain regions of Hungary were awarded non-reimbursable grants by our Foundation through a call for proposals. The supported organizations receive an annual financial grant of HUF 3-4 million for the implementation of their projects. The Foundation invites active NGOs with a proven track record and local capacity to participate in the program. The selected organizations can carry out projects of a maximum duration of 12 months to provide early skills development for Roma children in marginalized Roma communities.

The beneficiary organizations will receive specific support to develop their professional capacities, mainly in the form of professional training. In addition, study visits abroad and various events (workshops, conferences, etc.) will be organized under the program. Professional support will be provided mainly by Éva Szomor, a specialist in early childhood development.

The program runs in parallel in Eastern Slovakia and in Western Ukraine in 2019-2020, thanks to the members of the Carpathian Foundation Network (www.carpathianfoundation.org).

Cooperating and effective organizations will be invited to participate in the program in the coming years, as a result of which we will also seek to promote active cross-border exchange of experience.

As our main donor is moving out of the region, we are looking for individual and corporate donors and other sources to continue the program.
